Project Description

CLIENT | Cairo 3A

VESSEL | Edco Star

DATE | July 2008

LOCATION | Egypt

Project Brief

At the beginning of 2008, the Edco Star had lain idle in Alexandria for about two years. Prior to this she had been deployed in iron ore trades, which had taken a toll on her steelwork.

Without a range of significant steel repairs, including significant steel reinstatement to tank tops across seven holds, she would not be able to secure Lloyd s Register class approval and begin trading again.

Scope of Work

CTS recommended that class approved Sandwich Plate System (SPS) be used on Edco Star in place of traditional crop and renew methods in order to get the vessel tradable sooner, maximizing the useful time the asset could operate.

CTS provided the client with a project managed turn key solution to fit over 3,400 m3 of SPS on seven of the Panamax vessel’s holds in just one month.

Results

In total 3,433 m2 of tank tops and bulkheads were reinstated with SPS Overlay and the whole project was completed in 31 days alongside in Alexandria. A traditional crop and renew repair conducted in Alexandria dry dock would have taken around 100 days, so CTS’s SPS solution saved client three months of downtime (60% saving). This project was quite a testament to our commitment to minimizing downtime for clients.

Client Feedback

“I was amazed by the speed, quality and simplicity of the repair. We returned this vessel to work in less than half the time it would have taken to complete a conventional crop and replacement repair.”
