Project Brief

After satisfying all the requirements of a demanding pre-qualification procedure, CTS Offshore and Marine was engaged by Chevron to conduct a fully project managed turnkey steel renew of 300m2 of deck plating on the N/C/P/S tanks of this186,092 DWT Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel.

This was a challenging project owing to the CTS was responsible for the entire operation including steel work, surface preparation of the old and new steel plates, maintenance of the cavities, injection and sourcing of the elastomer for SPS. Nonetheless, we were confident this job was within the capabilities of our experienced welders and we were proved right.

Scope of Work

The chosen method of repair was Sandwich Plate System (SPS) because of its durability and resilience, the speed with which it can be installed. CTS’ project managers worked closely with Chevron’s logistics department to ensure all equipment, materials and consumables were available on the vessel in time for each phase of work. Meanwhile our specialist welders, injection engineers and safety and quality officers worked tirelessly to deliver a safe and fast steel repair.

Results

Benchamas Explorer was originally commissioned by Chevron in 1997 with the intention that she operate for 15 years without dry dock. Therefore, in 2012, one might have reasonably expected her to go off service for a significant period of time for repair.

Nevertheless, because of the innovative repair methods of CTS Offshore and Marine and the unrivalled capabilities of its specialist welders, there was no need to cease operations for a moment; she was repaired completely in situ. We saved Chevron in the region of $35 million.

Always striving for continual improvement, we complied with all of Chevron’s stringent requirements, and completed the job with zero lost time injuries and incidents.
